Has anyone else read this?  If so - what do you make of it?  It takes a bit of time and committment to wade through the very wordy document - and even then it doesn't always make a lot of sense.  I would be interested to hear everyone's views on it.  I have now been to a consultation meeting and I wouldn't have liked to tackle the document without going to that as they did explain some of it.  The issue about showing your licence has a sting in its tail.  Be careful how you answer this one - there is provision for infringement notices and it could be that if you don't put a comment in your answer you could find practitioners being issued with an infringement notice (read $fine) if they haven't got their card on them becasue they put their wallet in the wash etc.  Personally I think ALL practitioners should offer to show their licence card - this is one way of keeping the cowboys out of the industry - however I also believe there should be a similar provision that is the same as if you forget your driver's licence and are pulled over by the boys in blue - i.e. you have 24 hours to produce your licence.  The other thing is that homeowners/businesses can always check that you are licensed by visiting the PGDB website.

Plumbing inspectors are asking for licence cards daily now - especially on commercial sites.  I know the PGDB have on their workplan for 2011 a publicity campaign to educate the public on licenced and certifying practitioners, and undoubtedly will have something about producing your cards.  I agree Chilly, homeowners do not appear to ask to see your licence card - but the times they are a'changing!

Consultation closes at the end of this week (Thursday 9th I think) - so make sure you have your consultation document filled in before then.  Master Plumbers have sent out their suggestions and the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers have also made suggestions attached to their newsletter, so if you don't want to write it all up yourself you can make some choices.  Alternatively you can do it from scratch, but just make sure you send something in.  The PGDB seem to take no response as a general agreement that what they have said is ok.  It is a lot to wade through and some of the questions are not particularly well written, but nevertheless it will in part shape the future of our industry.  If you don't make the effort you can't complain afterwards. 

On another matter a huge boquet to the Department of Building and Housing who have changed the dates for consultation on the matter of Certification so that it doesn't fall over the Christmas period when everyone is on holiday and not thinking about work.  It is one of the most sensible decisions a government department has made in a long time and they deserve to be commended for it.  Watch out in the new year, and if you are a gasfitter make sure you have your say on this one as it will be important too.

I see that next year CBD is going to be consulted on.  I can't wait for that one  - soon practitioners will be hanging up their tools and just asking for a lap top or pen so that they can keep up with all the additional paperwork.  And none of it gets any pipes in wall.  Cancel your subscription to the Dominion Post - consultation documents are all you'll need to keep yourself amused in early 2011!!

hi guys, forget consultation the board is reverting to dirty tricks to push for law changes.
The pgd.board is trying to recruit public support and sympathy to allow them to introduce CB Licensing by going to the news media to highlight inferior work by non-tradesmen (one news tonight) This will have the effect of labelling all of us qualified and good tradesmen as COWBOYS and the board must be stopped from doing this. What the wider public do not realise is that any more costs imposed on good  tradesmen in the way of licence fee increases/levies etc will be passed on to them, perhaps we should go to the media with our side of the story!
We can all think of examples where we could highlight the bad to levy the good.  Example:- We will levy all vehicle drivers to prosecute those drivers that break the speed limit/illegally park etc, of course we are already levied (Taxed) to take care of illegal activity in all walks of life, Cheers
